General Security Services Bar Former Commando From Emergency Security Team

Members of the General Security Services (GSS) Jewish Division have taken advantage of the current situation to pressure Rabbis, educators, and activists in Judea and Samaria. Recently, a former member of an elite commando unit was barred from participating in a neighborhood emergency security team. The GSS declined to comment.

Over the past weeks more than 500 emergency security teams in communities and cities throughout Israel have been formed. The Israeli Police, led by Internal Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, has worked to form additional emergency security teams, distribute weapons, organize trainings, and arm citizens to respond to potential terror attacks.

In the Givat Shaul and Har Nof neighborhoods in Jerusalem, an emergency response team was formed by the residents with support from the police. The neighborhood has a limited number of IDF graduates that are not currently serving in the reserves. The police carefully reviewed potential profiles for the emergency response team to identify individuals that could best serve. A’, an educator in the area and a former member of an elite commando unit, was informed by the police that he would be an excellent candidate for the civilian response team. “You are among the few who are most appropriate to serve in the emergency response team,” said the organizer of the team.

However, at the last minute, A’ was informed that he would not be allowed to receive a rifle and join the emergency response team and that the decision was made based on instructions the police received from an external source. It is worth noting that A’ has no criminal record. Two weeks ago, just before the massacre carried out by Arabs from Gaza, a GSS agent called A’ and asked to speak with him about the students at his school. A’, who is familiar with the Jewish Division of the GSS asked, “Is what you want related to helping Jews during war time or harming them?” When he didn’t receive a clear answer, A’ hung up on the call.

Now, it seems that the GSS has taken revenge or is attempting to pressure A’ by barring him from participating in defending his neighborhood and his students. The GSS declined to respond to this article.

Hakol Hayehudi also reported this week about a similar case where the Jewish Division of the GSS barred individuals on the Ronen Hilltop from receiving weapons to act as part of an emergency response team.
