Agricultural Jihad: Hamas plants Olive Tries

After the terror attack in Gal Yosef, the IDF uprooted nearby trees that served as cover for attacks along the road. Hamas has adopted a strategy of planting of trees near roads and Jewish communities to serve as cover for terror attacks.

Since the terror attack against a shepherd last Thursday at the Gal Yosef community, the IDF has imposed a closure on the terrorist village of al-Muayyir, and bulldozers have cleared olive trees along the Alon Road. In our previous report on the “Agricultural Jihad”, we exposed how Hamas has planted tens of thousands of olive trees to seize land and provide cover for terrorists. These trees are especially planted near roadways or Jewish communities where attacks could be carried out.

During the attack last Thursday, the terrorist identified a Jewish shepherd riding an ATV near the Gal Yosef Farm and managed to surprise him from behind the cover of one of the trees. The shepherd struggled with him and miraculously survived, while the terrorist fled to al-Muayyir.

After the attack, the IDF launched a manhunt. Large forces surrounded al-Muayyir, and conducted house-to-house searches before eventually arresting the terrorist, a 30-year-old resident of the village.

To prevent future attacks, the IDF brought in bulldozers to clear illegally planted olive trees which for years have served as cover for terrorists carrying out attacks along the Alon Road.

This natural precaution was denounced by some far-left organizations and activists. These groups suggested that the IDF forces uprooted the olive trees as part of a collective punishment to deter terrorists rather than as a security precaution. Amos Schocken, publisher of Haaretz, even called Central Commander Avi Bluth a “war criminal” and suggested he be tried at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Despite the left-wing outcry, which apparently values Arab trees more than Jewish lives, the truth is that the olive trees are part of Hamas’s war against Israel.

According to Arab media, 14 suspects were arrested during the IDF search, and dozens more were questioned in the field. After the uprooting of the trees, Hamas distributed videos showing villagers trying to replant the trees. In a video released by Hamas’s official news agency, villagers can be heard promising to replant the trees and remain on the land “like the residents of Gaza.” One of them declared: “What happened to us is nothing compared to what is happening to the residents of Gaza.”

The takeover of Area C remains in motion with the Palestinian Authority investing considerable resources towards creating facts on the ground. As Mohammad Shtayyeh, until recently the Palestinian prime minister, openly said: “The Ministry of Agriculture is at the heart of Palestinian national security. What is our struggle with the Jew about? Our struggle is not about bread, but land. This ministry is the first line of defense of the land.”

A previous HaKol HaYehudi investigation revealed Hamas’s role in the agricultural Jihad. Our research revealed that Hamas funded and distributed hundreds of thousands of olive trees to Arabs in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza, with the goal of creating cover for terrorists near Jewish communities and main roads to carry out attacks.

We also identified Hamas cells at universities in Jordan that are supporting the agricultural takeover in Judea and Samaria as part of the jihad.

The funding pipeline, which has supported this project with millions of dollars over the years, flows from British organizations tied to the Muslim Brotherhood directly to the Zakat al-Quds Committee, a Hamas affiliate operating from the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. From there the funding went to tree distribution centers in Judea and Samaria.

Documents obtained in the HaKol HaYehudi investigation show that a key criterion for receiving the trees was planting them specifically in Area C and in areas near Jewish communities as part of a strategic effort to seize those areas and provide cover for terror attacks.

Following information provided by HaKol HaYehudi to the authorities about how the trees were funded by terrorist organizations, a rare operation was conducted in Kislev 5783 (December 2022). The operation involved representatives from the police, army, and Civil Administration, along with land inspectors from the Samaria Regional Council. During the operation, two trucks and about 2,000 olive trees donated by terror groups to the villages of Urif and Zeita Jammain were confiscated.
